I once believed that “the bigger the company becomes, the happier I will be.”
I kept hiring staff, pushing revenue, and chasing the goal of a 1-billion-yen company.
Yet even as the numbers grew, my heart felt increasingly empty.
Work consumed my days, time with my family decreased, and one day I found myself wondering:
“What am I working so hard for?”
It was around that time that I encountered a Zen teaching.
足るを知る者は富む(Taru wo shiru mono wa Tomu)
This does not mean being poor but content.
It means knowing which desires are truly worth carrying—
and letting go of those that distract you from your deeper purpose.
When unnecessary desire fades,
energy, clarity, and impact naturally increase.
This phrase made me realize that I had been pursuing growth out of my own ego.
- “A CEO who runs a big company is impressive.”
- “A CEO whose revenue keeps growing is a superior leader.”
But as long as your values are set by others, happiness will never arrive.
You will never feel satisfied.
You simply keep chasing “more and more.”
And once I let go of “more and more,” I realized something important—
I already had everything I truly needed.
Letting Go, and Receiving in Return
From that point on, I stopped prioritizing “growing the company” and instead chose to focus on
a style of work that genuinely fits who I am.
As a result, my revenue stabilized, and I gained both time and mental space.
“When I released my attachment to revenue, revenue increased.”
This surprised even me, but I now believe this is where the essence of Zen—and Eastern philosophy—truly lies.
On this site, I share insights based on my own experiences, including:
- How to apply Zen and Eastern philosophy to business
- Work styles suited for small businesses
- Balancing work and family life
You don’t need to make your business bigger to be fulfilled.
True abundance often appears only after you let go of unnecessary pressure.
If you’re interested in exploring such a way of working and living together, I’m glad you’re here.
